We're spreading out opening Anthony's Christmas presents. He doesn't understand the concept of "THE day" and this way he gets to enjoy them individually.
This morning we opened one of the presents from Grandpa Vince and Grandma Donna. It was a lego airplane and airport. It was clearly a hit.
For those keeping score, we can now turn his cargo prop plane into a jet and vice versa. The jet plane is also big enough to piggy-back the cargo plane space-shuttle style.
Yesterday (Thursday) was my last day of work for the year. We celebrating by going with Claire and Robert to the California Academy of Sciences. It re-opened after a major remodel last year and the two times we've gone before the museum was PACKED! Not so on a school-day at the end of the year. It was great, we pretty much had the place to ourselves to explore.
No pictures from the rainforest exhibit as flash photography is prohibited. We saw birds and lizards and snakes and lots of butterflies flew around us. They made Anthony a little nervous (his words). After lunch we went to the Africa exhibit. The top picture is the penguin tank. They were a lot of fun to watch.
After the penguins we went outside and played in the "cone" while watching a video on endangered animals. Then it was off to the children's play area. It was so much fun watching Anthony play--he's gotten old enough know to know hoe to play with the exhibits. He enjoyed "gardening" in the backyard, cooking in the kitchen and running up and down the gankplank(?)
It really was a great day! Edited to add: You will notice that Anthony is wearing his "hand-holding helper". He's a bit of a runner, just like his Mama was. This way he wasn't stuck in his stroller and I didn't have to worry as much about keeping him safe. He was a real trooper and walked the whole time!
Anthony isn't quite as oral as he used to be, but he's still pretty bad. Let's just say we have to make sure that all his art supplies are non-toxic! I pulled down the crayons this evening and Anthony immediately took an enormous bite out of the purple crayon. I confiscated the crayons which led to a bit of screaming. I tried to explain that crayons are not for eating, but it was hard to keep a straight face when confronted with purple teeth and drool.
Thanksgiving Sunday we took Anthony to Los Altos' Parade of Lights. For a small town parade, I was pretty darn impressed. There were a bunch of floats, all with lights, seven marching bands and a whole bunch of characters and what-not. Anthony LOVED it. The phrase of the evening was, "Oh Mama!" which he said everytime something interesting marched by.
Now that Anthony is getting older, we're trying out all the different Christmas activities in the community. This picture is from our city's tree lighting ceremony. They brought in snow (really, very icy) and set up a 10'x10' "snowbox" for the kids to take turns with. Anthony wasn't too impressed, he thought it was cold and wet.
Anthony has so much fun in the bathtub. He loves "fimming" and playing in the bubbles. Unfortunately, he does not enjoy the actual cleansing part one bit!
We brought out a mirror this time so he could admire himself with the bubbles in his face and hair. He was pretty entertained by the whole thing!
Last night our friends the Donahue's (Robert's family) hosted a small Christmas party complete with a visit from Santa Claus. (Courtesy of Mountain View Parks and Recreation) Anthony took an instant liking to Mr. Klaus. Really, no sign of fear, I was a little shocked.
Anthony didn't know what to ask Santa for, he hasn't quite figured that part of Christmas out yet. He did enjoy his candy cane and playing with the elf's Rudolph stocking.
(Robert pretty much gave the fat-man the evil eye and the teeny one in the bottom picture wanted nothing to do with him.)
Yes, I'm horribly behind on the blog. My apologies!
Bob's mother and step-father came for Thanksgiving this year. We had a really great trip. One day we took a field trip to Anthony's FAVORITE place in the whole world--Hiller Aviation Museum. No pictures, but it was a great outing. Grandma bought him a little skydiver man with a parachute. Its a lot of fun and was an instant hit.
Thanksgiving morning before we really started working on dinner was an excusion to the park. It was pretty crowded, clearly we weren't the only family who wanted to enjoy the fresh air. Anthony pretty much has one word when he "fings", "Higher". Grandpa happily obliged. Good thing there were four of us there as Anthony REALLY likes to fing.
After they left, Anthony spent quite awhile asking about Grandma. We explained that she went hom to Colorado. I need to get video of Anthony saying "Colorado", its priceless.
I assure you, those aren't actually words you want to hear. What that means is that your child has dreamed up something on their own. As far as I can tell, that's never a good thing.
In this case, it was sharing his cheese with the cat. After she had her licks, he ate the rest. (I was too busy photographing the fun to interfere.) On the bright side, he's gotten much more gentle with her lately and even seems to understand how to pet her properly.
Anthony was home sick a few weeks ago. I was folding laundry, including his Halloween costume. He saw it and wanted to put it on. As it was a lot of work to make, I'm happy to get multiple wearings.
So, he's wearing his costume. He asks for candy. I explain to him that candy is all gone. A few minutes later he reappeared with his goody-bag asking, "Knock doors?" A-ha! A moment of clarity. Then I found myself having to explain that Halloween only comes once a year.
That lesson hasn't completely sunk-in as he has been asking for "Knock-knock Halloween" on a fairly regular basis for about 3 weeks now, maybe even longer.
No, we are not potty training yet. I don't think Anthony is ready yet. He is, however, fascinated with the idea of using the potty. We bought him one at Target yesterday. No bells and whistles. Certainly no music.
No progress yet, but Anthony really does enjoy sitting on it!
Anthony is all about airplanes. His favorite birthday present by far was the Lego cargo plane from Grandpa Vince. He doesn't really use the accessories yet, but he loves flying it around and making it do loop-di-loops. He also loves to "break it" and have Mommy and Daddy put it back together. He mostly rips off the landing gear, sometimes the engines.
Dave and Julie (and cousin Joshua) sent him a rocket ship that arrived on Friday. That may be a close second. (I don't think he understands that a rocket ship is actually different from an airplane.) Hopefully we'll get pictures soon.
Tonight was make your own pizza night. Anthony was an amazing helper, I really mean it. He rolled out his own pizza dough (with help). Then he pushed the buttons on the food processor to grate the cheese. He even ate the olives off Daddy's pizza.
We need to start letting him help cook more often. My mom gave us both of Molly Katzen's children's cookbooks: Pretend Food and ??. I assumed the recipes are better for older kids, but we may need to start early!
Funny... Peanut Butter Cups have always been one of my favorites. Little dude begged for a piece of candy this afternoon so I gave him one. He looked at it very suspiciously, so I ate one to show him what it was all about.
He licked the bottom of his for awhile until he got through to the peanut butter layer. Then he was done!
Unfortunately, it was a little too used for me to finish it off.
